The passing of Sid Eudy was more impactful to me than most wrestler deaths. During my early days of watching the WWF, Sid had it all – the physique, the intimidation factor and the power. You truly believed he could be the most dominant wrestler of the 1990’s.

At the time, Sid first signed with the WWF, it was common for any new wrestler to be introduced to the audience via series of vignettes. Sid’s were different to most as they had a level of incredible intensity as he stared down the camera lens. Billed as Sid Justice it was unclear if he was a good guy or a bad guy.

Sid was chosen as the referee for the main event of SummerSlam 1991 ‘The Match Made in Hell’. Hulk Hogan and the Ultimate Warrior took on the hated trio of Sgt. Slaughter, Col. Mustafa and Gen. Adnan. Each team were convinced Sid Justice would be favourable to them during the match and threatened repercussions if not.

The match saw Sid call it down the middle as Hogan and Warrior were victorious. As Sid joined them in the centre of the ring to celebrate you wondered if this was the start of a ‘passing of the torch’ moment.

Sid further cemented himself as babyface later in the evening during wedding reception for Randy Savage and Miss Elizabeth. Sid stopped Jake the Snake and The Undertaker from attacking Elizabeth with a snake.

This should have led to Sid being the biggest star in the company. The build to WrestleMania VIII started with the world title being vacant and being the prize for winning the Royal Rumble. In a star studded match, Sid was in the final three with Hogan and Ric Flair.

Sid fairly eliminated Hogan, but then from outside of the ring, Hogan grabbed Sid’s arm and helped Flair drag Sid over the top rope. This sowed the seeds of a heel turn for Hogan which failed to materialise.

At a press conference promoting WrestleMania, Hogan was named as the number one contender when it should have been Sid. Sid was rightly aggrieved and was the one who started to turn heel.

The WrestleMania card was eventually changed and Flair faced Randy Savage for the title. The main event ended up being Hogan versus Sid. A Hogan victory later and the aura and magic around Sid Justice had faded.

After almost three years away from the WWF, Sid returned in 1995 as the bodyguard to Shawn Michaels. The image of Sid, Shawn and Jenny McCarthy heading to the ring for the main event of WrestleMania XI was memorable. Their alliance didn’t last long as Sid turned on Shawn the following night.

After a period in the Million Dollar Corporation and a brief hiatus, Sid returned in 1996 as a babyface again. After defeating Vader he earned a title shot at Survivor Series against Shawn.

The title match at Madison Square Garden was one of my favourite matches of the decade as it involved an insane crowd reaction to Sid turning heel mid match. At the time Shawn was a true good guy being managed by his trainer Jose Lothario.

During the match, Sid grabbed a camera from the cameraman at ringside and hit Jose with it. This elicited a loud fan reaction and Sid was incredibly over for the rest of the match. A further camera shot to Shawn led to a big crowd pop as Sid became the new world champion following a Powerbomb.

The shock title change helped build towards a rematch at the Royal Rumble in Shawn’s home town of San Antonio. The show had one of the biggest attendances of the 1990’s and Sid received a very different crowd reaction to the one he received at the Garden.

Shawn regained the title and the following three months saw a chaotic title lineage. Shawn lost his smile and vacated the title. Bret Hart won the vacant title only to lose it the following day to Sid. Sid then lost the title at WrestleMania XIII to The Undertaker.

The runs Sid had in the WWF 1991/92 and 1995/96 were my favourite of his career. It would be remiss not to mention though his time in NWA/WCW.

Prior to his first run in the WWF he was part of The Skyscrapers tag team with Dan Spivey and had a year as a member of the celebrated Four Horsemen. He was back in WCW for a period in 1993 which is most remembered for the fight with Arn Anderson in a hotel in Blackburn.

HIs most successful period in WCW came in 2000. In the chaos that was WCW at the time, he lost a title match to Chris Benoit. The next day Benoit left for the WWF. Sid then won vacant against Kevin Nash, was stripped of the title and won it back again. Sid was stripped again at the start of New Blood angle. All of this happened in a three month period.

Sid was a true superstar of the industry and would be a deserved inductee into the WWE Hall of Fame. That day will hopefully come soon and would be a chance for everyone to further celebrate ‘The Master and Ruler of the World’.
