There were so many incredible moments in May, that it was difficult to pick this month’s Trio. We said goodbye to the Gingerbread Man with a moving video tribute showing memorable images of Gingerbread from WWE history. Backlash saw an incredible match between Asuka and Iyo Sky and Clash in Italy had a brutal Tribal Combat main event with Roman Reigns proving his supremacy over Jacob Fatu.

None of these make this month’s Trio, however. The first selection is the main event of incredible AEW Double or Nothing show which saw Darby Allin defend against MJF.

The match had a good story behind it and an interesting stipulation – if MJF lost, he would be shaved bald. There were bald chants throughout the arena during the Countdown show where MJF faced off with Mick Foley on the microphone.

Darby had been pushing his body to the limits since winning the title from MJF the previous month. Regular title defences on Dynamite and Collision each week against some of the top stars in the company. This fatigue played into the story as fans wondered how much Darby had left to give.

In the end, he didn’t quite have enough as MJF regained the title after a pinfall which played into their previous pay per view match. Both men took incredible punishment during the contest, the highlight of which was a dive from the stage to put MJF through a table.

Darby had a nasty cut on his head which impacted his speed and balance which was a factor in his defeat. The damage to Darby didn’t end when the bell rang. MJF teased attacking Darby further when Kevin Knight came to the ring to make the save. Only Kevin didn’t. He decided to attack Darby himself to cement his heel turn.

Another big main event during May saw the Mascara Contra Mascara match in AAA’s Noche de Los Grandes. This was the perfect example of you never know what might happen with a new gimmick and is the second of this month’s Trio.

Chad Gable was having difficulty beating luchadores in WWE. He went on a tour of Mexico to learn about Mexican wrestling traditions. We then saw the debut of El Grande Americano who had several similar moves to Gable – although Gable insisted he was not Americano.

An unfortunate injury led to Gable disappearing from television, only for Americano to return with a slightly different look. Around the same time Ludwig Kaiser stopped appearing in WWE.

During the second half of 2025, AAA fans really started getting behind Americano. Embracing the culture, speaking Spanish and fantastic in the ring he became a big babyface in Mexico.

When Americano was attacked by another man dressed as Americano, it was clear this was the ‘Original’ Americano. The ‘Original’ American was cheered in America but booed in Mexico. The feud between them heated up leading to a much anticipated mask versus mask match.

Americano had an incredible ring entrance which gave me goose bumps. Before the bell could ring ‘Original’ grabbed a guitar from a band member and clock Americano over the head with it.

The match had everything, tables, chairs, bull ropes; but most of all incredible drama and storytelling. Los Hermanos de Americanos came to ringside to attack Americano but they were chased off by Rayo and Bravo. There was incredible dive from Bravo to take out Julio and Bruto.

‘Original’ was attacked with a walking cane by the comedian Ojitos de Huevo and then by Pimpinela Escaralata.

Americano’s girlfriend Andrea Bazarte came to ringside despite having previously been banned from AAA at the behest of ‘Original’. Andrea had a ticket in her hand and her argument with ‘Original’ gave Americano time to recover and make a comeback.

‘Original’ locked in a punishing ankle lock and it looked like Americano would tap. He finally fought out but his ankle was clearly bothering him as he collapsed in the ring. Americano eventually summoned up enough strength to hit the running headbutt to secure the victory.

After the match, ‘Original’ was in the ring with his wife and kids. He was appreciative of the Mexican fans and complimented his victorious opponent. He pulled off his bloodied mask to reveal himself as Chad Gable and handed the mask to Americano as tradition dictates.

Americano celebrated in the ring with Andrea and they kissed and danced. Even when dancing, Americano was selling his ankle. This really was one of the best matches of the decade so far.

The final of this month’s Trio is the entertaining tag match from Backlash as The Miz and Kit Wilson fought Danhausen and his mystery partner Minihausen. Minihausen was a smaller clone of Danhausen.

Minihausen was flying all over the place and Miz and Kit sold fantastically. The moment of the match was when Kit chased Minihausen back to crate he arrived in. The ‘cloning machine’ was activated and out came Minihausen along with several mini Danhausen’s who started attacking Kit.

Clever use of a mirror and a backfiring fire extinguisher let to the ‘hausen’s’ getting on top and enabled Danhausen to hit a pump kick on Miz for the victory. It may have been silly but it was so entertaining with great performances by all.
