June was a strange month in that the four biggest shows all took place during the last weekend of the month. WWE had Night of Champions, NXT Great American Bash, AEW/NJPW/CMLL/Stardom Forbidden Door and TNA Slammiversary.

All four shows had some good moments. The highlight of the NXT show was Kendal Grey winning the women’s title in a great match with Lola Vice, but this just missed being on this month’s Positive Trio.

Another near miss was the fantastic Riot Cabaret show Law and Order. The show had an incredible six man tag match between CPF and Diamond Eyes as well as the culmination of a four year storyline where we found out who shot Tate Mayfairs.

The first of this month’s Trio, has to be the incredible moment where we had the crowning of a new world champion. The build up saw Gunther selecting the ‘last real good guy’ Sami Zayn to be the referee for his title match with Cody Rhodes.

Sami tried his best to call the match fairly but ended up getting into a disagreement with Gunther which led to Cody retaining. Cody wasn’t happy about it ending this way and demanded another match. Nick Aldis made the match a triple threat match also involving Sami.

It was clear that Cody was more concerned with Gunther as he was quite dismissive of Sami’s chance of ever becoming world champion. Sami entered Night of Champions to a rapturous ovation in what was his tenth opportunity to win the big one.

As expected, with these three involved the match was fantastic. Part of the appeal was the genuine uncertainty around who would win. The ending of the match saw Cody going for the Cross Roads but Sami reversed into a rollup to get the victory.

Whilst the moment would have been bigger if it had happened in Montreal against Roman Reigns, it was hard not to feel emotional knowing Sami’s journey to this point.

The intriguing thing now is what does Sami’s victory mean for SummerSlam. Cody and Gunther will undoubtably want a rematch – although Gunther seems to be distracted by Aldis. Jey Uso wants to prove himself and there is a layered backstory with Sami. CM Punk is also predicted to return shortly.

Of the weekend shows, Slammiversary was probably my overall favourite. It didn’t have the best matches, but it had constantly good matches throughout.

It was great to see Uhaa Nation return in Mustafa Ali’s open challenge, the intense battle between Eddie Edwards and Moose, and Nic Nemeth and The Hardy’s regaining their titles. My favourite moment and the next of this month’s Trio, however, was the Knockouts title match.

Having first seen Xia Brookside in Bellatrix over eight years ago, it was great to see her become the first British born Knockouts champion in an impressive match with Lei Ying Lee.

Xia has really prospered as a heel. The match told a story as Lee missed a kick and connected with the ring post. This injury played into the psychology of the match. After Xia removed the turnbuckle, Lee’s head bounced off it. This allowed Xia to hit the Darkside for the win.

Forbidden Door was heavily focused on AEW talent. Mercedes Mone and Will Ospreay won the Owen tournaments in great matches. The show was too long however, and continued the polarising theme of multiple uses of blood.

My favourite match was a Forbidden Door match as the AEW women’s champion Thekla, faced Stardom’s Starlight Kid. The match continued the story of Thekla’s feud with the Stardom president Taro Okada and is the final of this month’s Trio.

Thekla and Kid have great chemistry dating back to Thekla’s time in Stardom when she was a member of HATE and Kid was a member of Neo Genesis.

Thekla is supremely confident and it almost got the better of her on a couple of occasions in this match but ultimately she was victorious following a couple of vicious stomps leading to the pin. After the match Skye Blue and Julia Hart came to ringside to help Thekla remove and spit in Kid’s mask. She also had time to slap Okada across the face in a feud with Stardom that is destined to continue.
